The team at Roholt Vision Institute is proud to be at the forefront of life-enhancing vision technology. New discoveries are constantly occurring in ophthalmology, and our awareness of them enables us to offer patients options when they need them most. Here, we discuss the SMILE procedure and how it helps people who may not be optimal candidates for LASIK laser vision correction.

What is SMILE?

SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. It is a type of laser vision correction that is performed to correct nearsightedness for patients with or without astigmatism. It is similar to LASIK in that it utilizes one of the same laser devices, but it differs in technique. Only one laser, the Zeiss VisuMax, is involved in the SMILE procedure. This laser does not affect the cornea, which improves the recovery process. Instead of reshaping the cornea itself, the SMILE technique removes a thin layer of tissue shaped like a contact-lens from in front of the cornea to alter the way that light travels through the eye.

The Advantages of SMILE

  • The entire procedure is performed in our office in just a few minutes. The laser takes less than 30 seconds to make the necessary changes. Because there is relatively little tissue manipulation in this procedure, many patients return to normal daily activities the following day.
  • Laser procedures are conducted after numbing eye drops have been inserted, so patients feel no pain. The SMILE technique is one of the gentlest laser procedures currently performed, with many patients saying they feel nothing at all. Additionally, post-operative pain is very minimal if experienced at all.
  • The SMILE procedure has been performed over 1.5 million times. Its safety and efficacy have been demonstrated over and over again.

Is SMILE Right for You?

SMILE is an FDA-approved technique for the treatment of nearsightedness and astigmatism. However, it is only one option of several that patients may consider. Roholt Vision Institute offers care that seeks to achieve the best results for each unique situation. To see how we can help you see better at all distances, schedule a consultation in our North Canton, Alliance, or Canfield office.
