LASIK has certainly improved the lives of millions of people. Here at our practice, many patients whose vision have been restored to 20/20 will often ask about whether or not annual eye exams are necessary following laser eye surgery. You may have ditch your eyeglasses or contact lenses for good but we would like to point here at our practice that an annual routine eye checkup is still necessary.
Best Defense Against Serious Eye Problems
While laser eye surgery can help you enjoy crisp, clear, and consistent vision, it will not help prevent debilitating eye problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. In fact, a study whose results were published in the Ophthalmology journal revealed that individuals who are nearsighted (myopic) have an increased risk of developing glaucoma than those who are not nearsighted. Thus, individuals who had LASIK to improve their vision still have higher risk of developing the aforementioned eye conditions which could potentially lead to vision loss.
Some Health Problems May Call for Annual Eye Exams Too
Patients who have existing health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and other chronic health conditions may also need to have routine eye checkups as these conditions can potentially lead to complications involving gradual or abrupt vision loss.
Moreover, individuals with allergies may suffer from dry eyes or any discomfort in the eyes. Routine eye checkups can help us figure out the possible cause of dry eyes or discomfort and prescribe medications if needed.
