So You Think You’re Too Young for Cataracts? Think Again!

Every so often here at our Ohio cataract surgery practice, majority of our first time patients assume that cataract has to do only with the elderly. We can’t blame them either as cataract has been popularly associated with advancing age, closely followed by diabetes, family history, obesity, and smoking as its top risk factors.

There’s Never “Too Young” When it Comes to Cataract
However, a recent article posted in The Washington Post was written by a 42-year old who never thought she would be diagnosed with cataract at such an early age. “Apparently, I wasn’t the only one amazed. My doctor’s surprise — partly because of my age and partly because I had shown no sign of a cataract at a routine exam just six months earlier — indicated how unusual it was,” the 42-year old writer admitted in the article.

The writer’s cataract was later treated with surgery — the cloudy natural lens of the eye was replaced with an artificial one. However, it took her a while to finally make the decision as she found out that most of her peers cannot relate nor provide advice to her current condition.
